The setting up of a Congregational church in Bangor to facilitate the needs of the English speakers was instigated by Daniel Williams of Garth and Robert Jones, a draper (who later moved to Wrexham). They felt there was a need for public worship in the English language, particularly with the influx of English speaking visitors during the summer months. John Edward Lloyd was born on 5 May 1861 at Liverpool. His family originally hailed from Penybontfawr, Montgomeryshire, and Lloyd remained loyal to these roots throughout his life. He was educated at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and subsequently at Lincoln College, Oxford, graduating in 1885 with a first class degree in history.
